Design-for-Manufacturability Feedback Loops Between Silicon Design Teams and Backend Assembly: A Cross-Industry Survey

Abstract

Effective design-for-manufacturability (DFM) coupling between front-end silicon design and backend assembly-and-test operations is widely cited as a determinant of new-product yield-ramp speed, yet quantitative cross-industry evidence remains sparse. This study reports the results of a structured 47-question survey administered to 124 product engineering managers across consumer-electronics, automotive-semiconductor, and industrial-IoT segments during 2020-2021. We characterize the prevalence of formal DFM review checkpoints, the typical lag between silicon tape-out and the first backend yield review, and the perceived effectiveness of joint review meetings versus asynchronous documentation. A maturity-model framework is proposed, mapping organizational practices to observed time-to-volume metrics. The findings inform process-improvement priorities for organizations seeking to compress new-product introduction timelines without sacrificing first-pass yield.
