Platform Engineering and Internal Developer Platforms: Measuring Cognitive Load Reduction and Onboarding Acceleration

Abstract

Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs) promise to abstract infrastructure complexity and reduce cognitive load on application teams. This paper presents a mixed-methods evaluation of three IDPs�Backstage, Port, and a custom-built portal�deployed across organisations ranging from 50 to 2,000 engineers. Using the NASA-TLX cognitive load instrument and structured onboarding time-trials, we find that well-designed IDPs reduce perceived cognitive load by 38% and cut new-engineer time-to-first-deployment from an average of 11.2 days to 3.4 days. Key design factors include self-service scaffolding, integrated documentation, and golden-path templates. Failure modes common to IDP projects are catalogued and mitigation strategies proposed.
